Wisenose is a label established to stimulate creative expression in the public space through clothing. The name stems from the Dutch word “wijsneus” which means smarty-pants, as we find clever ways to work around the rules that limit the distribution of creative work.
This is a sign that could have been placed in Schiphol. According to the regulations, that are strangely enough not that easy to find on the website, any form of putting up or distributing printed matter inside the Schiphol area is strictly prohibited. Of course this is mostly directed to commercial advertising, but these rules also keep artists and activists from using their (creative) voice to speak up to the public about certain matters.
Leaving behind artwork, posters and stickers is illegal in many public places, which you could say is a shame as these are the spots where you can reach people in their every day lives. This is why Wisenose creates alternatives for people that don't want to break the rules and still spread their message.
Our first product is a navy raincoat with a transparent sleeve on the back where you can slide any A3 sized poster, any message that you'd like to spread. Using our own version of Rene Magritte's "Ceci n'est pas un pipe", we indicate that we're technically not violating any of the rules, while still exposing the public to the poster.
For the lookbook we made a poster that says "Do not put posters, advertising signs or distribute any printed matter", based on the design of Schiphol signage system. After sliding it in the transparent sleeve we walked around at Schiphol.
